Art has had many purposes in helping people and cultures throughout time, but they are all connected by a common key reflection done by the individual creating the art. All famous or meaningful art has a message of some sort. This message, whether intended or not, is a direct reflection of the artist and therefore a reflection of the current society they live in. Of course this makes sense since artists are individuals themselves living in one or many different cultures, groups, or societies. By portraying their own unique selves in paintings, poems, songs, or any other art form, they are also naturally portraying the society that they were brought up in and the struggles or successes of that period. For example paintings during the italian renaissance began to illustrate humans in a more literal way because of the start of humanism. Art has the inate ability to help one reflect on themselve and in doing so it often times help shape movements or clarify beliefs. For example during the chicano renaissance, art was a way for the chicano people of Logan Heights to strengthen their culture and adopt old beliefs from the aztec culture. In all the movements that we have studied in class art plays a central role. In some of these movements artists actually had a an opinion in what that is, specifically in the Harlem Renaissance. Some artists thought that they should only portray themselves in a positive light as to show that they were a civilized people that should be equals with the white while others thought they should simply portray themselves. I think artists should just portray themselves. It is hard enough knowing and understanding what you believe (I have had to learn this with college apps) let alone trying to please others. I dabble in different mediums of art, my favorite being painting. It’s my best stress relief, and I think that’s also because it doesn’t have to be perfect. In art, there’s beauty in imperfection, which is really different from math and science, where imperfections mean something has gone wrong. It’s also not about being “good” at it. I don’t paint for anyone else’s approval. I think being an artist for a profession could be hard because you need to make a living but also need to fully reflect yourself. The best artwork that I have seen inspires me to learn more about the meaning behind the paint and likewise who the artists was. I think that is the underlying goal of painting to inspire or move others in some big or small sort of way.
