Recipe Project
In the Recipe Project we got in a group of two to three people. My group included Makenna and myself. We then got to pick a Spanish food to research the history of and make for a class potluck. We made flan, below you can read all about it. This project was super fun and tasty!

History of Flan Said by holidaycook.com, “Flan is found in recipes as far back as ancient Rome. It was during Roman times that domesticated chickens were first kept for laying eggs. The Romans, with eggs in surplus, and consulting the Greek's.Flan survived barbarian invasions (and perhaps pacified a barbarian or two). It surfaced as a generally sweet dish but still based on the old idea of mixing cream and eggs to form a custard. Our word for flan actually is derived from the Latin, "flado" (meaning flat cake), which became "flaon" in Old French.” Some people wonder what is the difference between flan and creme brulee. Although they have a fairly similar taste the texture in flan is more like a custardy jello and in creme brulee it is more like a thick pudding with a hard shell of sugar on top. Recipe Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour Total Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes Ingredients:
1.) Preheat oven to 325 degrees. You will need 6 ramekins or other specialty flan cook ware and a large baking pan to put them in. 2.) Pour 1 cup sugar in warm pan over medium heat. Constantly stir sugar until is browns and becomes caramel. Quickly pour approximately 2-3 tablespoons of caramel in each ramekin, tilting it to swirl the caramel around the sides. Reheat caramel if it starts to harden. 3.) In a mixer or with a whisk, blend the eggs together. Mix in the milks then slowly mix in the 1/2 cup of sugar, then the vanilla. Blend smooth after each ingredient is added. 4.) Pour custard into caramel lined ramekins. Place ramekins in a large glass or ceramic baking dish and fill with about 1-2 inches of hot water. Bake for 45 minutes in the water bath and check with a knife just to the side of the center. If knife comes out clean, it's ready. 5.) Remove and let cool. Let each ramekin cool in refrigerator for 1 hour. Invert each ramekin onto a small plate, the caramel sauce will flow over the custard. |
